Dear visitors,

For almost 20 years, I've been the coordinator of this fantastic playground with all my heart. Children's safety and enjoyment have always been my top priority. I've never publicly spoken out about national playground regulations before, but today I want to. Because something is happening that deeply affects me—and undoubtedly many of you.

The Netherlands is increasingly turning into a "rule-filled country." Activities we used to enjoy carefree as children are now being restricted. And unfortunately, our playground isn't immune to this either.

What's going on?

The rules surrounding splash pools and paddling pools have been tightened considerably. This is causing a lot of frustration, especially because these facilities are so important for children – especially those who can never go to a real swimming pool.

I want to emphasize and fully endorse one rule:

There must always be supervision near water. A child can drown even in a small amount of water. That's why I urge all parents and caregivers: Always stay nearby when your child is playing with or in water.

You are and remain responsible for your own child.

But now for the other rules...

Our splash pools are about 20 cm deep. Yet, we're now required to put up signs that say: "No diving."

I don't know how many times you've seen someone somersault into 20 cm of water—I never have—but anyway, the signs are coming. And then there's the big summer pool...

For over 30 years, this pool was at the playground every summer. Clean, hygienic, with rules, supervision, and drinking-quality water changed daily. But now it's no longer allowed.

And that breaks my heart. For all those children who can't cool off anywhere else.

For those parents who can't afford a day at the pool. For those hot summer days when children can truly be children.

According to the rules, the splash pools are also no longer allowed to be filled with stagnant water.

But we're going to try to keep them—within the new regulations—and we desperately need your help!

We fill the pools with clean drinking water and continuously let a small amount of water run through the drain.

We continue to clean and change them several times a day.

But:

➡️ No sand in the pool.

➡️ Untoilet-trained children = swim diapers required.

➡️ No food or drink in the pool.

Every little bit helps to show that we can continue to do this responsibly. Only together can we make this a success! We hope it will be approved at the next inspection.

Fortunately, Weena Beach (where the water sinks into the sand) is still permitted. We continue to strive for as much fun as possible, within the limits of what is permitted. We don't make the rules. But we do have to enforce them.

Thank you for your understanding, support, and help. For the children. For their summer. For their laughter. With playful regards,

Mirjan Coordinator of Weena Play Centre
